Why I’m writing this
Over Christmas and New Year, I was asked a question I’ve been asked many times before:
“So… what do you actually do?”
And if I’m honest, the fact I still get asked that tells me something important:
I probably haven’t explained it clearly or concisely enough.
So this is my attempt to fix that.
This post explains:
- What we do
- How we do it
- And why our clients keep coming back
The problem hasn’t changed (in over a decade)
I’ve worked in enterprise software, BI, and data for a long time, probably too long.
From day one in this industry, the core question has always been the same:
How do we build a single, trusted view of data so the business can do “stuff” with it?
I deliberately call it “stuff” because every business is different.
The use cases vary.
But they’re all powered by the same foundation: trusted data.
That part hasn’t changed in over 10 years.
What has changed is how we get there.
Tooling has evolved. Complexity hasn’t disappeared.
A decade ago, data platforms were:
- On-premise
- Hugely expensive
- Slow to deliver
- Complex to operate
- High failure rate
They often became departmentalised:
- “The data warehouse is for Finance”
- “Commerce owns reporting”
- “Operations have their own numbers”
Today, tooling has democratised data massively:
- Cloud platforms
- Consumption-based pricing
- Faster deployment
- Lower barriers to entry
This is a good thing.
But it has also created a new challenge.
The real issue: imbalance
In my experience, data clarity only comes when three things move together:
- Technology
- Process
- People
Most organisations lean heavily on just one.
Usually technology.
- Vendors care about selling licences and credits
- Recruiters and consultancies care about utilisation and timesheets
- Process? Often forgotten entirely
The result:
- Frustration
- Delays
- Shiny tools sitting on shaky foundations
Striking the balance between all three is hard.
I’ve yet to meet an organisation that finds it easy.
What organisations actually need
Most mid-to-large organisations ultimately want the same thing:
- A single, trusted view of data
- Governed, performant, and accessible
- A platform that removes debate and enables decisions
- Confidence in the numbers, not constant reconciliation
When that exists, conversations change:
• From “Which number is right?”
• To “What are we going to do about it?”
Why our clients trust us (and keep coming back)
This is the part that matters most.
Our clients don’t love us because we sell the newest tools.
They don’t love us because we follow long, ceremonial delivery processes.
They love us because we go after the root cause.
That means:
- We don’t paper over cracks
- We don’t sell shiny things to mask deeper issues
- We don’t optimise symptoms
Instead, we get to the uncomfortable truth of why things aren’t working.
That honesty isn’t always easy to hear at first.
But clients eventually appreciate it because once you’ve found the root cause, you can actually fix the problem.
And when we fix it, we do it properly:
- No messing about
- No long, drawn-out processes
- No endless workshops with no outcome
Here is your challenge.
Here is the root cause.
Here is how we fix it.
The realisation we had
After delivering many data platforms, a pattern became obvious.
Different clients.
Different industries.
Different source systems.
But fundamentally?
The solution was almost always the same.
That led to a simple question:
How do we take everything we’ve learned, the successes, mistakes, and lessons and turn it into a repeatable approach that reduces risk for clients?
The Assured Way – DataWorks
We documented our approach.
Not theory.
Not vendor marketing.
But what we’ve actually done, dozens of times, in the real world.
We call it The Assured Way.
An opinionated, proven methodology for building modern data platforms:
- Tooling choices
- Integration methods
- Operating models
- Governance Guardrails
- Delivery approach
- Support and administration
That methodology became DataWorks.
DataWorks is a managed data platform that combines:
- Best-in-class tooling
- Proven architecture
- Experienced people
- Clear processes
All delivered under:
- One SKU
- One PO
- One signature
What you get
- A single, trusted view of data
- Built in your cloud tenant. You own it.
- Managed by us
- Designed to scale with your business
And just as importantly, you avoid:
- Endless vendor pitches
- Long recruitment cycles
- Heavy support overheads
- Multi-year implementations
One simple decision.
One massive step forward in data maturity.
That’s what we do at Assured.
What’s next
Over the next few weeks, I’ll focus on:
- The specific use cases our clients are using DataWorks for
- The developments to the offering since its initial inception (there have been many)
But for now, we’ll leave it here.
So… what do you do, Jon?
We guarantee our clients have a single, trusted view of data to do “stuff” with.
