When reports slow to a crawl and your database struggles, every department feels the impact.
Delays create friction, and a major infrastructure upgrade is rarely in the budget.
It’s a familiar situation and one I’ve seen plenty of times.
Amina here! I’m a Principal BI Developer at Assured. In one case I recently worked on, the fix didn’t involve big spend or extra hires. It came down to using what the client already had in a smarter way.
A smarter data layer
The SQL server was powering multiple reports at once. The more they built, the worse things got. The quick fix was to throw more money at servers. But that wasn’t an option.
The client had two realities:
They couldn’t spend £1000’s to add more resource to their SQL server
They only had plans to use Power BI Pro licensing
So, instead of pushing them into upgrades, I built a data layer using Power BI Dataflows.
Why dataflows?
Dataflows let us add a buffer between the reporting layer and the database.
Now, instead of every report hammering the SQL server directly, they refresh from the dataflows, which pull from SQL on a scheduled basis.
It’s cleaner now. Runs better too. And they don’t need to chase anyone to fix it.
Confident decisions. Faster reporting.
The team gets what they need, when they need it. Reports load quickly. The SQL server stays stable. Any manual refreshes now hit a safe layer rather than the core system.
All done without upgrading infrastructure or hiring more engineers.
It’s reliable, easy to manage and fully in the client’s control. A smarter fix that keeps everything moving.
