If you’re a leader who depends on reports or KPIs, you know the frustration when the numbers feel wrong. You don’t need to be a technical expert to feel the pain of unreliable data.

But what if your entire decision-making foundation relies on one person you haven’t officially recognised? That’s a risk most organisations can’t afford to ignore.

A kitchen table revelation

I’m Mel, a Principal Consultant in Analytics Engineering at Assured. I see data challenges every day, but the moment that crystallised this widespread issue didn’t happen in a boardroom.

It happened in my neighbour’s kitchen.

Over tea, we discovered that despite working in completely different worlds (she was in the public sector, I consult with various organisations), we were both battling the same “data problems”. She wasn’t in a data role, but she was living the reality of broken processes daily.

The unsung hero of the spreadsheet

My neighbour’s official title had nothing to do with data. Yet, she was the de facto go-to person for:

Cleaning up complex files that no one else understood

Chasing down mistakes from internal teams and external partners

Spending her days reacting to crises instead of moving work forward

Translating messy numbers into something leadership could understand

She had the insight and the dedication, but she lacked the tools and the support to create real change.

It’s not a tool problem

That conversation was a turning point. I knew instantly that her struggle, and the struggle of so many organisations, wasn’t primarily about technology.

This was a change management problem about:

People

The undervalued experts already in the trenches.

Processes

The broken, manual workflows that create single points of failure.

Priorities

A culture that rewards quick fixes over sustainable solutions.

She didn’t only need a new software dashboard. She needed leadership that would trust her and a system built for clarity.

Who are your “hidden data people”?

These individuals exist in every organisation. They’re the invisible scaffolding holding your data integrity together.

You can find them:

In Operations, manually reconciling shipment records.

In Finance, building complex macros to generate a monthly report.

In Marketing, stitching together data from three different platforms into a single spreadsheet.

They aren’t on the analytics team, but they’re your most critical data advocates. If they leave, their institutional knowledge leaves with them.

Unblock your team

If this story feels familiar, your first step isn’t to buy a new tool. It’s to look inward.

Ask your team:

“Who knows where the bodies are buried?”

Identify the person who sighs when a specific report is mentioned. Who always knows the “special rules” for calculating a key metric?

“What’s blocking them?”

Is it a lack of authority? Outdated approval processes? Or a culture that doesn’t give them time to improve things?

“How can we give them a platform?”

How can you make their invaluable work more visible and impactful? Can you give them a seat at the table when discussing new systems?

Turns out your data hero didn’t need a cape… just a little backup.

Sustainable data transformation doesn’t begin with a massive tech overhaul, but by recognising and equipping the people who already care.

When you empower these hidden experts, you build a foundation for better decisions and resilient, long-term growth.

Sometimes, your most valuable data asset isn’t in your analytics team.
They might just be living next door.
